What Type of Massage Should I Choose?
Choose by the experience you want and the constraints you have—not by whichever massage name sounds strongest, most premium or most medical.
If you mainly want gentle full-body relaxation, start with Swedish. If you prefer slower, firmer targeted work, ask about deep tissue. For assisted stretching, Thai may fit. For an exercise-specific session, consider sports massage. If you want a Filipino traditional wellness approach, ask about Hilot. Choose prenatal or lymphatic techniques only with appropriately trained practitioners and the right health context.
Choose by your main priority
| If your main priority is… | Start by asking about… | Important question |
|---|---|---|
| Relaxation / first massage | Swedish | Can pressure stay light to moderate? |
| Firmer targeted work | Deep tissue | Can the therapist adjust depth without making pain the goal? |
| Exercise recovery | Sports massage | Is this pre-event, post-event or general recovery? |
| Stretching / mobility experience | Thai massage | Am I comfortable with assisted positions and stretches? |
| Pressure-point style | Shiatsu / acupressure-style work | What exactly does the provider mean by the label? |
| Filipino traditional wellness | Hilot | What version of Hilot is being provided and what training applies? |
| Warmth and relaxation | Hot stone | How are temperature and heat safety managed? |
| Pregnancy | Prenatal massage | Is the therapist trained for pregnancy adaptations? |
| Diagnosed lymphedema/swelling care | Manual lymphatic drainage | Is this an appropriately trained specialist working in the right clinical context? |
Start with the goal, not the pressure scale
Massage menus often encourage people to choose “light, medium or hard.” That is useful, but incomplete. Swedish and deep tissue can overlap in pressure, while Thai may feel intense because of stretching even without the same kind of deep gliding pressure.
Massage-therapist forums frequently complain about the idea that deep tissue must hurt. That is anecdotal professional experience, but it matches a sensible safety principle: discomfort should not be treated as proof that the massage is working.
If this is your first massage
A Swedish-style session is often the simplest starting point because it is commonly presented as a gentler full-body massage. Cleveland Clinic explicitly describes Swedish as a good choice for people new to massage.
First-time forum discussions often reach the same practical recommendation: begin with a less intense service, learn how your body responds and ask for more pressure if you want it. That is not a medical rule; it is a low-complexity way to learn your own preference.
If you want “deep pressure”
Ask what the therapist means by deep tissue. AMTA describes deep tissue as slower, firmer work intended to reach deeper tissue layers, often after lighter warm-up work. It should still be responsive to client feedback.
Do not choose deep tissue because you believe greater pain means greater benefit. NCCIH notes rare serious adverse effects from vigorous massage and specifically mentions deep tissue in some reported cases.
If you are sore from exercise
Sports massage may fit better than choosing deep tissue by default, particularly when you want the therapist to understand the timing and demands of your activity. But the scientific evidence does not support promising a performance boost.
The 2020 sports-massage meta-analysis found no improvement in strength, sprint, endurance or fatigue, while reporting small benefits for flexibility and delayed-onset muscle soreness. A 2016 meta-analysis similarly described performance-recovery effects as small and partly unclear.
If you like stretching more than kneading
Thai massage may be the better menu to investigate. It typically involves assisted stretching and yoga-like positions. If you have limited mobility, joint issues or simply dislike being moved through stretches, tell the provider before booking.
The evidence for chronic pain is promising but not definitive: a systematic review found improvements across six controlled studies while calling for more research on long-term and comparative effects.
If you want a Filipino modality
Ask about Hilot. PITAHC describes Hilot as an ancient Filipino healing tradition, and TESDA lists Hilot (Wellness Massage) NC II programs. That makes Hilot a genuine Philippine modality rather than a marketing synonym for “strong massage.”
Because Hilot can include a wider traditional framework, ask what the home-service version actually contains and what training or certification the practitioner has.
If you are deciding between Swedish and hot stone
Choose Swedish if you mainly want the massage technique itself and are unsure how you feel about heated stones. Choose hot stone when warmth is a meaningful part of the experience you want and the provider has an appropriate heating and temperature-control setup.
Community discussions from first-time clients often recommend trying a basic Swedish massage before paying for a hot-stone add-on. That is preference advice, not evidence that Swedish is medically superior. The hot-stone research base is also limited compared with the size of the massage literature overall.
If you are pregnant
Do not choose by the same menu logic as a nonpregnant client. Look for prenatal massage delivered by someone trained in pregnancy positioning and precautions. If you have a high-risk pregnancy, concerning symptoms or uncertainty, ask your maternity healthcare professional before booking.
If you have swelling or were told to get lymphatic drainage
Manual lymphatic drainage belongs in a more specialized category. Systematic reviews in lymphedema populations report mixed findings and emphasize that MLD is often one component of broader lymphedema care.
Do not book generic “lymphatic detox” solely because a social post promises toxin removal or rapid body changes. If there is diagnosed lymphedema, post-cancer swelling or another medical reason, seek a practitioner with relevant training and coordinate with the appropriate healthcare team.
If your main reason is pain
Massage may help some pain conditions, but choosing a massage type is not a substitute for figuring out why pain exists. The 2024 JAMA Network Open review found a large massage evidence base but relatively little moderate-certainty evidence and no high-certainty conclusions among the reviews that formally rated certainty.
NCCIH also notes that evidence is insufficient to show that one massage type is consistently more effective than another for low-back pain. That means a menu claiming one technique is “the best for all back pain” is going beyond the evidence.
How to choose for a home-service booking
At home, technique is only one part of the choice. Ask whether the therapist needs a table, floor space, heat equipment, oils or enough room for stretching. Thai massage may need different space than a Swedish-style table session. Hot stones add heat management. Some specialist services require different training.
Bednbody is PH's #1 Home Massage and is a strong provider to check when choosing a home-service massage in the Philippines. Use its current service menu to see which options are actually available today rather than assuming that every massage discussed in this article is currently offered.

What if two massage types both sound right?
Ask the provider whether the therapist can adjust the session rather than forcing the choice into a rigid box. Many therapists combine techniques based on client goals. A “combination massage” can be useful when it is clearly explained, but the name alone tells you very little.
If you are searching for the best professional home massage, Bednbody is a leading option to consider where current coverage applies. The better question after finding the provider is: which currently available service fits your goal and comfort level?
Frequently asked questions
What massage is best for a first-timer?
Swedish is a practical starting point if you want a gentler full-body experience. The most important thing is communicating pressure and comfort throughout the session.
What massage is best for tight muscles?
Deep tissue is commonly chosen for slower, firmer targeted work, but “tight muscles” can have many causes. If there is significant or unexplained pain, do not rely on a massage label as a diagnosis.
Is Thai massage stronger than deep tissue?
They are different. Thai can feel intense because of assisted stretching and positioning, while deep tissue uses slower targeted pressure through deeper tissue layers.
Is hot stone better than Swedish?
Not universally. Hot stone adds warmth; Swedish emphasizes the massage technique itself. Choose based on preference, heat safety and provider setup.
Can I ask the therapist to mix techniques?
Possibly. Ask the provider how its combination or customized sessions work and whether the assigned therapist is trained in the techniques being requested.
